RBDNotSoBasic...Hexie Heart Pincushions

Roses are red, violets are blue, I couldn’t help but make a few!

For my next #RBDNotSoBasic project, I made these really beautiful hexie heart pincushions.

I used Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cotton, Lori Holt’s Shabby as well as Liberty London's new blender for RBD: The Wiltshire Shadow collection.

The new Liberty London cottons for RBD are printed on soft Lasenby cotton and are perfect for just about any project. Isn’t that stack a warm colors beautiful? The Wiltshire Shadow Collection will be in stores this month!

Here’s the supplies I used to make mine:

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Heart

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Heart Background

  • 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric for the Pincushion Backing

  • The Hexie Heart Quilt Block from Center Street Quilts

  • Weighted Stuffing Beads or Crushed Walnut Shells

  • Basic Sewing Supplies

Here’s how I made my Hexie Heart Pincushions:

  • Make any size of the Hexie Heart Quilt Block (they come in 3’’, 4’’, 5’’, and 6’’)

  • Cut the pincushion backing to match the size of your HH quilt block

  • With RST, sew the HH quilt block and backing together with a 1/4’’ seam allowance

** Remember to leave an opening to turn and stuff your pincushion**

  • Without clipping your stitches, clip the corners

  • Turn the pincushion right side out and gently push out the corners

  • Fill the pincushion with stuffing beads or crushed walnut shells to desired fullness

    • I’ve heard crushed walnut shells can damage your pins, use what works for you!

  • Hand stitch the opening closed

The first one turned out so beautiful, I had to make two more. Haha.

Pincushions are the perfect handmade gift, especially when they feature Lori Holt’s Sewing Pretty Pins and tied with black velvet ribbon. Wouldn’t you agree?

I have one more WiltShire Shadow project I’m working on. Hopefully I can finish it this weekend. Stay tuned.
