Summer Dreams with Oliso...

I’m so excited to share my Summer Dreams project with you!

Guess what? It’s FREE!

The Summer Dreams series, featuring a few of my favorite designers is hosted by the creators of the Smart Iron, Oliso. Last week, Beverly of Flamingo Toes kicked off the series with her gorgeous Hope Rainbow Embroidery Hoop.

My project is inspired by my great grandmother’s Patchwork Palace which was a small building next to her home where she and several ladies from the community, including my grandmother would sew, quilt, and socialize.

Shape Shack, a beginner friendly foundation paper pieced project features quilty icons nested inside the Patchwork Palace. So cute, right?

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • Shape Shack Foundation Paper Piece Templates (Click the Link Below)

  • 7 Fat Quarters for the Shapes and Shack (I used Riley Blake Designs new Poplin Basics)

  • 1/2 Yard for the Background

  • 1/2 Yard for the Backing (I used my Blossom Basic in Rainbow)

  • 1/4 Yard for the Binding

  • 16’’ x 29’’ Section of Batting

  • Oliso Mini Iron

  • Miscellaneous Sewing Supplies including, Rulers, Rotary Cutter, Thread, and Sewing Machine

From your background fabric cut the following sashing/borders:

  • (5) 2’’ x 7’’ rectangles

  • (2) 3’’ x 25’’ rectangles

Here’s the simple instructions for making your own:

  • Make the Shape Shack FPP blocks.

  • Remove the paper from the back of the blocks.

  • Sew the 2’’ x 7’’ sashing rectangles between the blocks.

  • Press seams toward the sashing.

  • Sew (1) 3’’ x 25’’ border rectangle to the top of the completed row.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Sew (1) 3’’ x 25’’ border rectangle to the bottom of the completed rows.

  • Press seams toward the background.

  • Layer the quilt top with the batting and backing.

  • Quilt and bind as desired.

Using my BabyLock Journey, masking tape, and Aurifil Monofilament Thread, I created a cross-hatch quilt pattern on this project. If you want to learn more about why I use masking tape, you can watch my Fat Quarter Shop video here.

I love Oliso! The Mini Iron comes with a silicone trivet that’s perfect for resting the iron on when making your project. I love using it for small project like this one. It’s light weight and perfect for traveling too. The Smart Iron is the big sister to the Mini Iron and features Oliso's patented iTouch® technology.
